Do I really need Two Photographers at my Wedding?

As a wedding photographer, one of the most popular questions I’m asked is, “Do I need a second photographer?” The answer is: it depends. Check out the tips below:

Reasons to skip a second photographer:

* You’re having a small wedding

When you’ve got 50 guests or less, having two photographers can be a lot. When you have a small group, one photographer is less obtrusive.

*You’re on a tight budget

If you splurged on your dress and flowers and your budget is at its max, skip the second photographer. Your primary photog is more than capable of documenting your day on his/her own.

 

Reason to consider a second photographer:
*You’re having a big wedding

No matter how ninja-like your photographer is, capturing images of 250+ guests can be tough. If getting photos of most guests is important to you, having another photographer is something to consider.

*You have several locations for your wedding (hotel, church, etc)

If you’re getting ready in one place, having your ceremony at another, and the reception in still another location, it’s a great idea to have a second photographer. That way there can be a photographer with each person getting ready. It’s nice to have each photographer travel separately in case of a flat tire or other problem as well. You just never know. That way, no matter what, there will always be a photographer ready to go. When photographing a church wedding, many times I have my second shooter take off right after the ceremony to head to the reception site. I do this for a few reasons: to scope it out, to capture the detail shots before guests get there, and to capture some of the cocktail hour while I’m doing formals.

*You’re getting married in a church where you can’t move around

Many churches in Frederick have strict photography rules. Several churches make us photographers stay put in one place. So, if there are two of us, we at least can get two different angles.

*You want to see your wedding from many different angles

Each photographer comes to your wedding with a different perspective and unique eye. What one of us sees, another might not. This is an advantage when it comes to having multiple photographers. I love photos of couples with their family just before they walk down the aisle, but I can’t ever capture that because I’m at the front of the ceremony prepping to capture bridesmaids and groomsmen walking down. That’s when having a second shooter is so great. They can hang back and document those sweet moments, then slide in as the ceremony is going on.

Below are a few of my favorite examples of two shooters/two different perspectives.

Which shot do you like better? The couple’s silhouette leaving the church, or the couple surrounded by their bridal party? Both share fun parts of the day from different perspectives.

This couple was staying at the same hotel, but on different floors that were far away from one another. It was great to tag team the getting ready so we weren’t running around wasting valuable time.

This church didn’t have a place for the bride to wait before the wedding, so they stayed in the party bus. I love the groom nervously looking out the church window, but I also love the bridesmaids on the bus waiting for their big moment.

secondshooter_0005This ceremony was quickly moved indoors when it started to rain. The aisle was tight as the venue had to pack all the guests into a small space. My second shooter actually stayed outside and hunkered down behind the celebrant to snap some great photos where you can see the couple’s faces.

Five Approaches to Welcoming Your Guests With Music

The cocktail hour at your wedding reception serves to welcome guests to celebrate with you, and the right soundtrack is key to setting the mood for the kind of party you intend to have. Years ago, cocktail hour music was kind of a throwaway, with couples directing their DJ or band to just play “background” music. (Conducive to conversation, perhaps, but also utterly unmemorable and with no personal style whatsoever.) I always advise our clients to work with their DJ to craft a cocktail hour that really reflects their tastes and allows guests to mix and mingle in a fun, upbeat way.

Cocktail hour music can be approached in all kinds of ways. Here are five styles you may want to consider for your guests’ first musical impression at your reception:

  1. Timeless Classics: As everyone probably knows, jazz and vocals are among the most traditional music choices for cocktail hour. Of course your grandparents will love you for kicking off your party with songs they recognize, but everyone else will appreciate the romanticism, too. After all, these songs have stuck around for a reason! Consider artists such as Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone and Nat King Cole.
  1. Same Old Song (Now with a New Sound): For a playlist that appeals to guests of all ages,  why not consider contemporary covers of classic love songs? Older guests will know the words and melody, while younger guests will appreciate the fresh take and modern production value. Some fun covers include Jamie Cullum’s “I Get a Kick Out of You,” Cat Power’s “Sea of Love,” Norah Jones’ “Love Me Tender,” Ellie Goulding’s “Your Song,” Madeleine Peyroux’s “Dance Me to the End of Love,” and Ingrid Michaelson’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.”
  1. No Ordinary Oldies: Motown songs and other oldies are great for kicking off the dancing portion of the reception, but they can also create a fun, upbeat atmosphere for your cocktail hour. Who wouldn’t smile at hearing songs such as Sam Cooke’s “Cupid,” Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made to Love Her,” Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is,” and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”?
  1. Modern Love: Most couples want to incorporate music into their wedding that is personally significant. However, unless the songs have a fast tempo and are recognizable to the majority of the guests, they won’t be hits on the dance floor, which is what makes the cocktail hour the perfect time to get creative. Some contemporary songs to consider for this romantic hour are John Legend’s “All of Me,” Cake’s “Love You Madly,” Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights,” The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” and any of the fun, whimsical tracks from the Nouvelle Vague collective, such as their cover of Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough.”
  1. Notes on a Theme: If your wedding is centered on a fun theme, the cocktail hour can be a great opportunity to further express it. Classic and glamorous weddings may choose to incorporate Rat Pack artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Meanwhile, outdoor summer weddings might choose to include Dave Matthews Band, Bob Marley and Jimmy Buffett.

Whatever cocktail music you select, make sure it reflects your individuality and includes songs you love (almost) as much as you love each other!

Glam Squad 101: Your guide to finding the best fit for the big day

Flawless hair and makeup is the finishing touch to your bridal look — and no real “recipe” for bridal bliss is complete without it. For worry-free beauty on one of the most memorable (and quite possibly, most stressful) days of your life, it’s wise to leave the task of making hair and makeup magic to the professionals. And a glam squad is just what the wedding planner ordered!

Master makeup artist, bride-to-be, and owner of JK Winn & Company, Jordan Winn, gave us the skinny on glam squads to help you find the best fit for your big day.

 

What exactly is a glam squad, and how is it different from a regular hair stylist or makeup artist?

A Glam squad is a group of stylists who work together regularly. They all know each other’s strengths and can provide flawless beauty services within a swift and effective timeline. They know how to make sure the chaos and pressure do not affect anyone’s mood. They are used to being on-the-go, so they are excellent at setting up in small areas, have an exquisite kit of goodies, and work with the space provided. Glam squads that specialize in wedding beauty understand that a wedding day beauty stylist is more than just someone who does your hair and makeup.

As I narrow down my search for the perfect glam squad, how important is it for me to see a company’s portfolio, and what should I be looking for?

Very important! Look for a variety of different tones, types, looks, hair color, skin color, etc., in the portfolio. More importantly, look for someone who resembles you and don’t hesitate to ask for more examples. There are only so many spaces on a websites for images. Check out social media and such so you can see behind the scenes and other current looks they are providing clients. An active social media presence is a good sign that the squad is active and passionate about showcasing their work.

 
Should a reputable glam squad offer to do a trial run with me before my wedding?  

Yes, and that trial should be with the exact artist that you would be working with on your big day. It will most likely bring your artist and you closer, help her understand your vision, and cut down on anxiety. Also, you can use the trial run as an excuse to get all glammed up and do something fun such as a boudoir shoot or a fancy dinner out with the fiancé!

What should I bring to my glam squad consultation to ensure they will be able to turn my hair and makeup dreams into reality?

Bring all of your pictures and Pinterest pins, your veil and hair accessories, and a picture of your dress. Additionally, wear a shirt similar to the color of your dress and with a neckline similar to your dress so that you can get a good idea of how everything will look. Ideas of what you truly dislike are also very helpful.

 
Should I wash my hair before my trial? And what about moisturizer?  To wear or not to wear?

This may sound crazy, but YES for facial moisturizer and NO for hair washing! Hair is best one day old. Wash your hair the morning of the day before your trial. Only put a little product in it — or none at all if at all possible. Blow dry it or air dry (whatever is normal for you), but do not flat iron hair! It will “steam” the hair shut, and make it impossible for it to receive any more heat styling, and this could affect your final result tremendously.

What are some key things I should be able to accomplish from my bridal hair and makeup trial?

A successful trial will give you:

  • An overall look for the wedding day with some variations
  • A chance to try different lip colors
  • An opportunity to decide on and finalize hair accessories, (with or without veil, etc.)
  • A connection with your artist (this is very important) and an opportunity to establish comfortable communication with her
  • A chance to go over day-of scheduling
 
What will a reliable glam squad do in case one of their artists is ill or otherwise unable to make it to my wedding?

There should be some clear clause in your contract that outlines what would happen in the event of an artist being unable to make it to your wedding. It should outline if there would be a replacement artist or not, and should state whether you would get a refund of any kind should this happen. If this clause does not exist in the contract, don’t be afraid to ask for it.

3 Reasons to Include Your Photographer During the Planning Phase

Planning ahead can truly make or break your wedding day experience. And the one crucial person to include in the planning process (other than your future spouse, of course!) is your photographer. If you do, you will ensure the following:

1. You will get images of all the major events you want captured. When you and your photographer work together to plan your wedding day timeline, she can advise you on the best time of day to plan for your most anticipated photos, in your location of choice. Maybe you’re getting married at a beautiful Frederick countryside venue and “the shot” you want is of you and your new spouse with the Catoctin Mountains in the background. The best way to ensure you will get this image is to communicate with your photographer. She can figure out sunset time on that day so that lighting will be at its absolute best. If you include your photographer in the timeline planning, she can tell you how to make sure she’s there for the important photos you want, such as your planned grand exit. Many couples forget to factor in travel time from the ceremony to the reception location, which often cuts your bridal party portrait taking time short. Your photographer can offer suggestions so this won’t happen.

2. You and your photos will benefit from optimal lighting situations. For outdoor ceremonies, most photographers would advise couples not to plan the ceremony mid-day (when the sun is at its highest and brightest) or after dark (of course). The sun can cast extremely harsh shadows on your face mid-day, and no matter how much Photoshop prowess your photographer has, the images will not be their best. After dark, your photographer will need to use flash to light the subjects in photos. If you love natural light images with little to no artificial lighting, then this scenario is not ideal. Regardless, if you communicate your timeline well with your photographer, he or she will be able to bring any additional equipment needed to capture your day.

3. The day will run smoothly when all vendors know each other and are working together. Have you hired a wedding planner or day-of coordinator? If so, encourage your planner and photographer to chat before the wedding day. It may even be a good idea to plan an in-person meeting if possible. If your coordinator works for your venue, then he can educate your photographer ahead of time on venue policies and share his knowledge of the venue. If you don’t have a planner or day-of coordinator, then your photographer can be your best ally in helping your day to stay on track by allowing him to communicate with the DJ or band, and other vendors so the day will be stress-free for you.

 1. Do what you want.

We work with brides of all ages, cultures, hopes and dreams. Your registry should be about who you are and where you want to go in the future. The planning process can be crazy; keep in mind what really matters: you and your fiancé.

2. Timing is everything.

Register six to eight months before your wedding. It may sound early, but your guests will appreciate you taking the guesswork out of gift buying for engagement parties or showers. Many couples also update registries before any parties to make sure that there are plenty of options for guests to work with.

 

3. Bring the proper support.

Whether your fiancé, your maid of honor, family member, or a whole entourage comes to your registry appointment, make sure they are ready to support your tastes and choices. When in doubt, keep it simple. After all, these gifts are for you!

4. Think long term.

Remember, you are registering not only for the present day, but also for your entire life together. This is the time to ask for china, flatware and linens that will become cherished heirlooms. Just because you live in a tiny apartment right now, doesn’t mean you won’t host family holidays in your future home.

 

5. Balance your selections.

It’s important to provide a variety of price points for your guests. Aim for at least twice as many gifts as guests, ranging from under $50 up to $300 and above. Your cash-strapped brother and wealthy aunt both need to have options within their budgets.

5 Reasons You Need An Engagement Session

“I don’t think we really need an engagement session. We already have lots of nice photos together.”


“My fiancé hates having his photo taken.”


“Just so you know, I’m really self-conscious.”


“We are both so awkward in front of a camera.”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard those phrases or something similar during the last 11 years, working with engaged couples. And having been in the situation of planning a wedding myself not that long ago, I totally get it. It can feel so weird to have a photographer take photos of you and your partner. But there are so many reasons why you should break through that fear and do them! Here’s five:

1. On the wedding day, you’ll already know what you’re doing.



Your engagement session can be considered a practice session for the wedding day. Once you’ve got the e-session done, you will know how your photographer works, how you feel in front of the camera, what you like to do (and maybe what to avoid)! You’ll feel more comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

This goes for us photographers, too. We get to see you two in action. Are you snuggly? Are you guys totally silly together? Is one of you a blinker? We get to take mental notes of things to keep in mind for the wedding day, which are really helpful in delivering the best images to you.

 

2. You can go somewhere that means something to you.



The wedding day is busy and there’s not always time to travel for photos. So take advantage of having a professional with you and do your engagement session somewhere that is important to both of you. Maybe it’s where you first met: your high school, for example. Other ideas: where you got engaged, your favorite coffee shop, where you bike on the weekends. The sky’s the limit. Be creative.

 

3. You can bring your pets!



Many wedding venues don’t allow your pets to be part of your wedding day. Remedy that by having them be a part of your engagement celebration. No photographer can resist those fuzzy faces!

 

4. Use the photos for everything!

Your engagement photos will come in handy. They can be used for Save the Dates, gifts, a wedding guest book, photos for the programs or on your wedding website, on Facebook, Twitter… everywhere. I also find that couples like hanging up their engagement photos, as they are typically more casual than wedding photos (great for a little frame on your desk at work, too). Another way to use them is for your newspaper engagement announcement. Not every family does this, but many do. It’s great to have a professional photo ready to go for this occasion.

 

5. It gets you excited! (and the photographer, too!)



After an engagement session, my couples tell me how much more excited they are about the upcoming wedding day. They are pumped to share a big, special day with their friends and family. An engagement session is a great way to celebrate the two of you and focus on what’s at the core of a wedding: two people in love getting hitched!

Ask the Experts: Beyond the 'Highlight Reel Days'

With Valentine’s Day just behind us, it seems like the perfect opportunity to talk about love and relationships! On holidays and special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, and most notably, on our wedding day, that we celebrate love and those we love.

But what about the hundreds of normal days before, in between and after? Isn’t it in those regular days that true love is shown, experienced and most needed?

What I want for us all is to prepare for and invest in those regular days that make up our lives. For us to go beyond just that one “special” day in the highlight reel of our lives.

As a wedding and portrait photographer, a wife, and a mother, I am extremely passionate about encouraging others to continually commit to building their relationships before and after the wedding day. Your venue, food, floral arrangements, decorations and even your photographer are an important part of your wedding day that help to celebrate your love; but they all pale in comparison to the love of your spouse in the difficult times in life.

If you want your love to be strong, it takes a deeper commitment beyond just choosing the perfect linens and getting the most creative bridal portraits! My advice to couples who are preparing for their wedding day, or even those who have been married for a decade, is to invest in your relationship with each other.

Please know that will look different for each couple.

For my husband and I, before we were married, it meant that we made absolutely sure that we shared the same foundation on things that matter to us. We share the same faith, dreams for the future, plans for parenting our children and managing finances, among other very important foundational decisions.

Through three years of marriage, we have not always seen eye to eye, but we still share the same foundation. While we were engaged and planning our wedding we took the time to attend marriage preparation classes together through the Marriage and Relationship Education Center in Westminster, Md., as well as some with our pastor.

They prompted us to talk about unfamiliar things that we had not faced since we weren’t yet married. They also helped teach us how we give and receive love so that we could better understand how we were trying to communicate our love to each other.

We learned how important it is to take time to do what fills us up individually so that we can be more fulfilled for each other. It means that we continue to come back to reevaluate that we are growing together and making decisions in unity.

I also strive to know and love my husband better today than I did yesterday. I want to look back on our wedding day as one of the days of our lives that I loved him least because, for me, that will be the reward of a loving marriage.

One of our goals this year is to make more time for date nights as well as time to just rest. That can be very difficult to do while raising young children and with both of us working jobs with odd hours. But I believe that our son deserves parents that are not just happily married, but also fulfilled in their relationship. We should be best friends who are loving life together, even on the difficult and regular days.

I encourage you to seek out counseling or classes as you prepare for your wedding day. Attend a retreat or conference or go on a vacation to help you reconnect or deepen your relationship with your spouse if you’re already married. It is so worth the investment of time and resources into your relationship!

It helps both you and the person that you love to ensure the days before, in between, and after your “highlight reel” days are just as joyful and fulfilling.

For some couples, though, the idea of being the center of attention is terrifying, whether it’s because they feel they can’t dance or because they don’t like having all eyes on them.

But, there are ways to make what’s supposed to be a special, romantic moment a lot more fun and a little less scary. Here’s a few tips:

  1. Seek out professional dance instruction. Obviously, someone who’s shy may not be comfortable having a highly choreographed routine for a first dance. But, spending some time with a dance instructor can help a couple improve their sense of rhythm. It also can help them to feel more comfortable dancing with one another – something many couples haven’t done much — if ever — prior to their wedding day.
  2. Don’t go it alone. Sure, you’ll want to take a spin around the floor as newlyweds, but there’s no reason you can’t have your DJ or bandleader invite all the couples in attendance to join you after a minute or two. Once the floor is full of couples dancing, you’ll no longer feel like a spectacle, and can focus on enjoying yourselves and the beautiful wedding you’ve planned.
  3. Pick a short song. Any decent DJ or band should be able to shorten any song you love, but here are 10 classics (or classics-in-the-making) that clock in at under 3 minutes:

The most important thing to remember when having your first dance, though, is to have fun with it! Like everything else on your wedding day, it will go by in a flash. So, try to relax and enjoy yourself for those few, fleeting moments together.

To hashtag or not to hashtag? Two area experts share their opinions (and tips) on hashtagging your wedding.

JANICE CARNEVALE, owner of DC-based Bellwether Events:

If you and your friends and family are very active on social media, you might want to hashtag your wedding. This will allow your friends and family from all aspects of your lives to connect via these social media outlets and share images and thoughts before, during and after your wedding weekend.

You will want to think about it early on and make a plan so that it is a successful hashtag. First, decide on a hashtag, and make sure no one else has used it already. 

My friends and clients have used #meetthemindells, #lindseywedsbryan and #notthefootballmannings. You don’t want to pick something so common and easy (#emmaandchris) that some other couple might use it too. If you and your friends primarily use Instagram, don’t worry about picking one that is a little longer, as you have unlimited characters on Instagram. If you and your friends use Twitter more often, then a shorter hashtag is better.

First, a word of caution: using a hashtag may make your wedding public, regardless of whether you want it to be. It’s worth taking time to consider how—if at all—you’d like guests to use their mobile devices at your wedding.

Warning aside, hashtags can be a lot of fun. A hashtag can allow more people to participate in your big day. We’re not just talking about far-away folks who can’t make the trip, but also about friends and family who may not care for dancing, but love to catch others in celebration. And in the first few days following your wedding, hashtagged pictures can fill the gap between your memories and your in-the-works professional photos.


JANICE:

Once you have the hashtag picked out, you need to inform your guests about it. The best way to do this is to include it in everything your guests will see: the save-the-date, wedding website, on an enclosure card in your invitation, in the welcome bag welcome note, and on the paper goods and signage around actual the wedding. You should also use the hashtag throughout the engagement whenever you are doing something wedding related – interviewing photographers, at a catering tasting, during a tux fitting etc. Remind your Wedding Party early and often to use the hashtag as well. Make sure all your wedding professionals know about it too – your planner should include it on the wedding day timeline.

LISA:

Make it easy for guests to participate. Beyond word-of-mouth, consider including your hashtag on programs or table numbers—or even on the invitations themselves. A screen to stream tweets and pictures is the hippest new addition to modern wedding festivities, but not required. Guests will be able to keep up, as long as they’ve charged their phone batteries!

JANICE:

You must be prepared to explain what a hashtag is and how to use it those wedding guests who are not as social-media savvy. I explain hashtags as a way to attach your image or tweet to a unique search engine within that social media outlet. If you have a better way to explain hashtags, please share in the comments! Having an Eco-Beautiful Wedding in Frederick County

Having an Eco-Beautiful Wedding is a lot easier than you think!

On top of it being easy to do in Frederick, it can be colorful!  One of the biggest misconceptions about having a “green” wedding is that the colors have to be green and brown and earthy.  As you can see from the above photo – an eco wedding was nothing to do with the color!  Having a “green” wedding is all about how local you can make your vendors and choosing products and service providers that also purchase locally and chose sustainability as their mission statement.  Here’s an easy checklist of how to go about having an Eco-Beautiful Wedding Day!

Start with a venue that gives back to the community. One of our favorite places is Thorpewood!

Look for wedding gowns that are manufactured in the States or Canada. Many designers (yes couture designers like Vera Wang) design their high end gowns in the states and then ship the designs to China or India or beyond for cheap labor and manufacturing. Some of the best couture designers that design and manufacture in the states are Claire Pettibone and Monique Lhullier. Then we have a local designer that we love – Elizabeth St. John and New York City Designer The Cotton Bride (they use sustainable cotton fabrics and design and manufacture right in New York City!).

Look for caterers that are locally run in Frederick and use sustainable and local farmers. “Local” in the catering industry means a 500 mile radius. There are tons of farmers on the East Coast that can provide all you need for your local and sustainable wedding. One of our favorite local caterers in Frederick is Canapes – ask for Mike Delphey!

Try to have your ceremony and reception in the same location to reduce the amount of  travel your guests. This reduces the overall carbon emissions for your wedding day.

Try to make sure that all of your flowers are as local as possible or grown in the US, Canada, Holland or New Zealand. These 4 countries are committed to sustainable farming. Check out our website and come meet with us for your floral design needs!

Look for DJ’s that give back to the community on their websites.

Ask your make-up artist and hair stylist to use eco-friendly products on your wedding day. Liz Wegzyn (make-up artist) and Hair by Giselle know all about these products!

Flowers by Month: Choosing Seasonal Blooms for Your Event

Do you know your Dahlia from your Delphinium?

If not, don’t panic!  You are not alone.  In fact, you’re in very good company.  Contrary to what you may have heard, it’s not important to bring a perfectly crafted idea of your wedding flowers to a floral consultation – that’s what the floral designer is there for after all!

Here are a few Floral Design top tips to consider:

JANUARY: The holiday season may be behind us, but that doesn’t mean that January weddings have to let go of the magic of the season.  Consider a combination of fresh red Roses, Anemones and strategically placed candles and diamanté’s to capture a sparkle as night falls early.

FEBRUARY: The month of Valentines Day – also the month of overpriced Roses!  We recommend avoiding them if at all possible this month, consider Delphinium or Iris as alternatives.   Lilies are also spectacular and can fill the room with a beautiful aroma – especially the Orientals.

MARCH: Spring is on us, consider going with a clean, fresh combination of Freesia, Calla Lilies,  Gerbera Daisies and Ranunculus.  If contemporary is your thing, combine Orchids with fresh moss and slate, with the right lighting, this combination is breathtaking.

APRIL: Spring as most definitely sprung now, as have the Peonies.  This stunning and most sought-after wedding flower is now available, the Peony season is short and we recommend making the most of it.  The beautiful large white and soft pink petals of this flower make any bridal bouquet simply spectacular.  The red Peonies really make a statement as do lotus flower pods.

MAY: Don’t let your Spring turn into Summer without a nod to the tenacious and abundant Maryland wildflowers.   Cornflower, Anemone, Lizards Tail, Poppies and Wild Ginger are unique, unusual and awesome when built into wedding bouquets and table centerpieces.  If wildflowers aren’t your thing, consider the spectacular Lilly.  There are so many varieties of Lilly but as a general rule, the Orientals will fill the whole room with a beautiful aroma, the exotics will be more likely to provide that intense color displays.

JUNE: Why go to the expense of drying and framing a bridal bouquet when you can opt for a living bouquet?  Most succulents such as Sempervivium, Sedum, Agave and Echeveria can be incorporated into a living bouquet by a good florist.  Take care with these delicate plants, leave your bouquet in a sunny window and you will keep your wedding flowers forever.

JULY: Our favorite flower for July is Gladioli, they are colorful and dramatic, reaching high out of displays like floral fireworks.  The ‘Glad’ stalks provide attention-grabbing height to a lower, subtle table centerpiece providing a nice balance.  Consider combining Hydrangeas, a favorite for weddings.

AUGUST: If you’ve opted for an August wedding in the Mid-Atlantic, you’re probably already prepared yourself for heat and humidity, you’ll probably also be considering bright, summer colors.  Sunflowers, Roses, Gerberas and Lilly’s are common but if you really want to fill the space with flowers, seek out Stocks – they come in many colors and you’ll smell them before to see them.

SEPTEMBER: One of the most popular months for weddings – and perfect for the outdoor Bride.  If traditional is your thing, go for Red Roses and Baby’s Breath but don’t stop there – mix in different textures too – Anthurium, Dahlias, Snap Dragon and Zinnia balance these nicely and are sure to get noticed!

OCTOBER: Deep Orange, Red, Yellow and Brown are by far the most popular and traditional choices for the season.  These colors lend themselves to the spectacular and eye-catching Pincushion Protea, rich deep colored Calla Lillies and Roses.

NOVEMBER: Still in Fall but with the colder and longer nights, the best Chrysanthemums of the year are blooming.  These Mums are best used to best effect in pomander balls, creating a beautiful texture which is still resilient enough to be carried down the aisle by a younger bridesmaid and can double up as an eye catching hanging centerpiece at the reception.

DECEMBER: It’s so tempting to get drawn into the holiday season with vivid Poinsettias but the biggest rewards are in taking a more subtle approach to the season.  Consider incorporating thistles into boutonnières for a more masculine touch, climbing ivy and hints of spruce into the table centerpiece and Mistletoe into the bridal bouquet for a playful twist.  Deep crimson red tones introduce depth to the arrangement and can be incorporated using silk ribbon.

 

Don’t forget the vessel! Give careful consideration to what your florist is recommending to contain your floral displays. Try to move away from overused mirrors in favor of more natural textures like slate tiles, moss, tree bark, pine cones and willow.

Above all, make it your own. Ask your floral designer to build in a favorite or memorable piece of jewelry, perhaps something old, new, borrowed or blue. Consider the venue, the theme, your relationship, the season and keep it true to yourself.

6 Steps to Changing Your Name After Your Wedding

Once the excitement of your wedding day has died down, it’s time to begin your new normal life. For many, this includes going through the process to officially change your name to your married name.

 

1) Get your Marriage License

You will need either the original marriage license or a certified copy. If you were married in Frederick County, you can obtain certified copies from the Records Department in person or by mail.

 

2) Go to the Social Security Administration

To change your name with the SSA, you will need documents proving your legal name change, in this case your marriage license; your identity, usually your driver’s license; and possibly your citizenship, with your birth certificate or other documents. Complete an application for a Social Security card  and take or mail these documents to your local social security office (in Frederick County: Suite N, 5340 Spectrum Drive, Frederick, MD 21703). You should receive your card within 10 business days.

 

3) Get a new Driver’s License

With your new social security card, your marriage license and your old driver’s license, visit an MVA office in person, within 30 days to change your name.

 

4) Change your Bank Accounts

Most banks require you to appear in person, with you new driver’s license, to update your accounts to your new name.

 

5) Inform your Employer/Payroll

Contact your company’s Human Resources Department to change your name on your work records and benefits information.

 

6) Fill in the blanks

Once you have changed your name on your social security card and your driver’s license, use those to change your name elsewhere, including:

  • landlord or mortgage company
  • post office
  • utility companies
  • credit cards
  • School/Alumni association
  • doctor’s/dentist office

Boudoir Photography – A Sizzling Wedding Trend

The word “boudoir” – pronounced “bu-dwah” – originates from the French meaning for a lady’s private rooms and the “private” entertaining done there. How it came to be associated with photography is anybody’s guess, but we’ll leave it there. Mention the phrase “boudoir photography” to most people today and you’ll probably get a request to pronounce it again (with a look of confusion). Explain it as intimate, sensual photography for women and more than likely you’ll get a slow look of understanding (followed with a little blush). If you’re a modern day bride, chances are you know exactly what it is and might even have a plan for a session of your own.

 

Who is boudoir photography for?

In a nutshell, boudoir photography is for all women, but has become especially popular with brides looking for the perfect groom’s gift. If you’ve racked your brain trying to come up with something he’ll adore, won’t put at the back of the closet after a week, and will create an amazing memory – boudoir photos might just be it. The bonus for you is that you’ll spend a day being pampered, catered to, and fussed over. All in beautiful lingerie and clothing you’ve picked just for your session. The outcome will be classy, sexy, yet provocative images to share on your wedding day with the one you love.

Boudoir photos are the ultimate gift for a bride looking to express her affection and playfulness for her soon-to-be other half. It’s also a great way to boost self-confidence and have a day away from wedding planning, per se, to focus just on you. Do you realize how much fun this is, too? If you’re overwhelmed with wedding details and worried about whether your day will come together after all the planning you’ve done…worry no more. A boudoir session is a great way to release a lot of pent up pre-wedding feelings and emotions and let it all go (at least for the day!). Chances are your photographer has worked with a few brides along the way and will be able to calm your nerves and reassure you that all will be well…with a stunningly sexy set of images to hand over at the end of it all.

How do I find a boudoir photographer?

Ask your wedding photographer! If this is not something they offer as part of their services, without a doubt they know someone. Also, check with your friends (especially your married friends!). Chances are you know someone who has already done this or they know someone who has. Word of mouth referrals, as with many things, is a great way to start. You want to hear first-hand details of someone else’s experience to get an idea as to whether that photographer might work for you. Also, as with all photography, you want to make sure your photographer has experience, skills, and a portfolio to stand behind. Boudoir photography is a very specialized niche. It takes a good eye and knowledge to know how to pose women and since we all come in different shapes and sizes, not every pose works for every woman. Coaching and posing instruction are key to a successful session. You’ll want someone you feel comfortable with, as well. Ask for a pre-session consult.

I want to book. Now what?

If you have a consult or are confident enough in your photographer’s services and portfolio to forego one, how do you get booked? More than likely you’ll need to put down a retainer, book 3-6 weeks in advance (minimum) and take a look at a choice of packages and/or products. Some photographers offer pre-set packages and some offer a sitting fee with products on an ala carte menu. A few things to keep in mind when making your agreement: a deadline to have your product in-hand, the package price and products you are purchasing, and a confidentiality agreement to detail how your images may be used (or not) by the photographer. Also, does your boudoir photographer work with a professional makeup artist? Hair and makeup are one of those things that take these images to the “next level” and shouldn’t be minimized.

Saucy or sexy, glam or natural…make it a fantastic session and enjoy the experience! Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wanting to do it again!

9 Tips for Surviving a Bridal Show

A Bridal Show or Expo is a great place to get started with your wedding plans. They can be held at convention centers, banquet halls, even your local shopping mall, and vary in size. You get a chance to meet local professionals – see examples of their work, taste samples of cakes and foods, collect vendor promo materials, and even win free goodies. Make the most of your experience by being prepared and arming yourself with some time-saving tips!

1) Create a new email account.

Save your personal or work email inbox from being bombarded with spam and wedding offers by creating a new email account for all of your wedding correspondence, and to enter wedding contests or drawings. Our favorite free email provider? Gmail.

 

2) Register in advance.

Whenever possible, purchase tickets beforehand and pre-register. Why? You might score a cheaper rate and it’ll save you from standing in line (and filling out lengthy forms) on the day-of.

 

3) Make a game plan.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed without a solid plan. Which types of vendors you are most interested in? Are there any you have been dying to meet in person? Make a list of the wedding services you need and have an estimated budget for each service. Plan ahead, map out your route and visit your must-see vendors first.

4) Come prepared.

Make sure to bring:

  • Pen and paper (to take notes).
  • A tote bag (to carry all the brochures you’ll get from vendors).
  • Pre-printed address labels (to enter giveaways and to give to vendors. Include your name, wedding date, wedding location, mailing address and wedding email address).
  • Cash (to pay for your ticket if you have not pre-paid and to purchase refreshments).
  • Checkbook or credit card (to put down a deposit in case you want to book a vendor).
  • Calendar (to know your schedule in case you need to make follow-up appointments with vendors you’re interested in booking).
  • Color swatches/themes/ideas (to bounce off of vendors that you want to hire).

 

5) Eat before the show.

It’s impossible to think clearly when you’re hungry. Popping cream puffs and truffles all day might give you a brief sugar rush, but you’ll fizzle out quickly. Eat a light, healthy breakfast before the show, bring a few healthy snacks (and water!) for during, and plan to go out for food afterwards. Planning an after-expo meal will be a nice rest after being on your feet all day, and it will keep your expo buddies focused knowing there is a reward at the end of the day!

6) Take notes.

It’s important to take notes on pricing and services, but also your personal opinions. When choosing a vendor, it’s important that their personality is a good fit, too. Is there anything about the vendor’s personality that stands out? Are they friendly and professional, or grumpy and unwelcoming? Take notes on individual cards or sheets, and then staple these notes to each flyer or business card when you get home to help remind you who you’ll want to contact later.

7) Wear comfy shoes.

It may seem obvious, but a bridal show is not the time to show off your newest pair of heels. You will be on your feet and walking A LOT, with many other brides. Also, whenever possible, leave your coat in the car – you’ll have less to carry, and you won’t be hot!

8) Play photog.

Bring your camera or keep your smartphone handy, and be sure to snap photos of anything you like. Vendors often have sample displays and setups for inspiration – you may see a centerpiece idea, a new way to display escort cards, or a fancy way to serve cupcakes.

9) Get organized.

As soon as you get back from the show, organize your goodies – categorize your vendors, make any last-minute notes, and take note of who you want to follow-up with. Chances are, within a week you will start forgetting details, and you want to be sure you remember everything!

STOP. Don’t stress! Many details can wait, but here are the top five things you should tend to soon after you’ve gotten engaged:

 

1. Enjoy the moment.

First step? Chill. Go out to dinner. Bask in your newly-engaged glow. Gaze lovingly at each other and think, “OMG, this person is going to be my husband/wife!” Revel in the joy that you and your fiancé are feeling at this very moment – and make it a point not to talk wedding details. How long should you do this? At least a week. If you want, longer. In fact, other than the aforementioned best friend(s) and parents, you might even want to hold off on Facebook updates. As soon as you let the world in, that’s when the questions start – and along with them, the stress. You may want to hold off (at least a few days) just to enjoy each other, because as soon as you tell people, OH, the opinions. They will be offered – often and loudly.

 

 2. Picture your perfect day.

Once you’ve shared the big news with everyone and things have calmed down, start dreaming of your perfect day. You and your fiancé should start thinking about what you want in your wedding. Do you picture it surrounded by tons of family and friends? Just the two of you on a beach?  Or something in between, just immediate family and a few close friends? Now is a good time to collect ideas that inspire you and to learn what you want—and don’t want—in your wedding.

 

3. Budget, budget, budget.

I know, it’s not romantic, but it is vital to determine your overall budget before you move forward with any planning. Your budget will be your guide for every decision you make. Are the two of you paying for the wedding yourselves? Do you have family who is contributing? Is your fiancé’s family contributing? If you don’t know, it’s time for the tough conversations. NEVER make any assumptions about who is contributing to your wedding. Some parents will step up and offer a specific amount of money, some will offer an “unlimited” budget (even “unlimited” needs to be defined), or, they might not offer at all, waiting for you to come to them.

This is also the time to talk to your parents (if they are involved), about what your vision is for your wedding. Are you envisioning a small wedding in a garden while they’re picturing a large, extended family hotel ballroom wedding? It’s important to keep in mind that often the larger financial interest your parents have in the wedding, the larger “say” they will feel they have. If your visions don’t match up, be open to compromise. Yes, it’s “your” day, but they’ve likely dreamed about this day for a long time, too.

 

4. Start a guest list.

Once the budget and style of wedding have been determined, it’s time to create your guest list. You’ll need a general headcount before you begin your venue search – you need to know how large of a space you’re looking for. You don’t want to fall in love with a quirky little art gallery that holds 60 people standing for a cocktail reception when you’re planning on a 150 guest seated dinner, right? Be sure to get all parties involved – you, your fiancé, and all parents. Get everyone’s list, eliminate any duplicates, and have any discussions that need to be had (Mom, I haven’t seen those neighbors across the street in 30 years, do we really need to invite them?). Helpful hint: Ask parents to prioritize their list by breaking it into an A list, B list, etc. – it’ll help you make cuts later on.

 

5. Find a planner.

The earlier the better! A good wedding planner can take your guest list, budget and wedding style and help you find the perfect venue and vendors. They know how break down your budget and get you the most for your money.
