From the photographer:
Sara and Mayan met through work and fell in love! Sara made the flower arrangements and the decorations for the wedding. Mayan’s mother and brother and sister in law flew over from Israel! Mayan’s mom, Eti, brought the fans for the guests. They were so beautiful! The day was absolutely perfect. They had a cocktail hour first, Sara wore a different dress, then the ceremony and reception. It was amazing!

I bet you love fall leaves as much as we do. So many amazing colors- from yellow and reds to royal purples and deep browns. Leaves are the perfect jumping off point for inspiration of all kinds.
Alyssa and Daniel were married on a beautiful springtime day at the Stone Manor Country Club. They picked a wonderful location to hold their outdoor ceremony and reception just outside Frederick, MD.
The manor is situated on 114 tree lined acres with a historic barn, fields, and a pond. Stone Manor Country Club is also a bed and breakfast with antique filled rooms.
Alyssa and Dan were so laid back and the entire day was a celebration of all their family and friends coming together as one big happy family. Looks like a blast!

Jessica and Cody fell in love way back in high school. And it’s easy to see why–they round each other out perfectly. He is adventurous, caring, and handsome. She is funny, easy going, and the life of the party…and judging from the events that transpired during the wedding day…their life together will surely echo these qualities.

Hey hey – we’d like to introduce you to our new monthly column! We’re really excited to share this with you.
We’ve teamed up with the cocktail masterminds behind the bar at VOLT here in Frederick, MD to bring you a simply delicious cocktail each month. Using simple and easy-to-find ingredients, each cocktail will be a piece of cake to make at home (trust us, we test each one!).
When Zach, lead bartender at VOLT, first told us he wanted to make a classic daiquiri for the month of July, we admit….our first thought was of the frozen, sugary drinks you get at your favorite beach establishment. We were pleasantly surprised to find out what Zach had in store for us this month. Turns out a classic daiquiri has nothing to do with frozen fruit concentrate or high fructose corn syrup (phew) – Zach informed us many people are flat out making daiquiris wrong these days.
Originating in Cuba, many people have claimed credit for the creation of the daiquiri (let’s be honest, rum and lime have been going together nicely longer than PB&J). What is more interesting than who created it is who its biggest fan was – author Earnest Hemingway. This man is legendary for his appreciation of a good drink (or any drink, for that matter); see his famous quote: “I drink to make other people more interesting.” History has it that Hemingway’s daiquiri, also known as El Papa Doble, was concocted during the 30s and 40s while he was on hiatus from writing in Cuba by a bartender who manned his favorite watering hole, La Florida. El Papa Doble contained grapefruit juice, maraschino cherry, and no sugar (what a badass), but most people enjoy a little sweetness with this strong cocktail.
Without further adieu…onto the recipe!
Tools:
(Zach recommends the tools from Cocktail Kingdom. Oooo….shiny!)
Pint glass
Jigger
Cocktail shaker
Mesh strainer
Cocktail strainer
Juicer
Cocktail glass
Ingredients:
1 whole lime
Simple syrup (pre-make make using equal parts water and white sugar – boil on the stove or in the microwave)
White rum (Zach prefers white rum for a more refreshing drink – try El Dorado – but any rum you enjoy can be used. Dark rum provides a bold, caramel flavor.)
STEP 1
Juice 1 whole lime into a pint glass, straining through a mesh strainer to filter out pulp. When using a juicer (pictured below), cut the lime in half and then make two slits into the sides as shown – this helps get the juice out from every nook and cranny.
STEP 2
Using a jigger to measure, add the following into a cocktail shaker:
¾ oz of lime juice
½ oz of simple syrup
2 oz of white rum
STEP 3
Fill cocktail shaker to the top with ice and shake hard for 12 seconds (yes, exactly 12 seconds). Says Zach, “you can only under-shake this drink, never over-shake it.” (File this under “random bar trivia.”)
STEP 4
Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a lime wheel. Enjoy! (Responsibly, of course.)
Keep an eye out for next months cocktail – it’s going to be a great one!
Zach Luther is lead bartender at VOLT in Frederick, Maryland. He considers himself a purist when it comes to cocktails, leaning towards classic drinks with simple ingredients. He has been interested in making drinks for as long as he can remember – at 14, as a busboy at a local Frederick establishment, he found himself always asking questions of the bartender, curious about how to make each drink. His passion for specialty spirits was strengthened when he went to Belgium to learn more about different styles and types of beers. You can find Zach behind the bar at VOLT crafting specialty cocktails almost any day of the week.
The day of Matt and Christina’s wedding at Walker’s Overlook the skies threatened rain, which would have ruined the outdoor ceremony they’d dreamed of for their JMU themed wedding (they met there!). These two scientists stayed cool, calm, and collected though and decided to go ahead with the outdoor ceremony they’d envisioned. The rain ended up holding off until the end of the night and the day went off without a hitch! We loved all of the thought and care these two put into their wedding day…from their handmade invitations, to all of the signage they made together, to the pies that Matt made to serve their guests for dessert! Another favorite thing of ours was Christina’s AMAZING bouquet! It had artichokes and peppers in it! Thank you to Katie Nesbitt Photography for sharing this beautiful day.

When you’re committed to making something work, you just find a way. For Fiorella and Kyle, this means dealing with a long distance relationship right now while he lives in Richmond for med school and Fiorella stays in Northern Virginia. They met back in their college dorm and have been finding time to spend with each other ever since. One of those times happened to be a trip together to Peru to see Fiorella’s family. They would celebrate New Years there, but also a new beginning. Fiorella didn’t know about that part yet though. As they flew down, Kyle practiced what he would say over and over in his head. The ring was tied tight to a string to his belt loop and tucked into his pocket. Fiorella will admit that she had their trip planned out each day down to the hour, which left Kyle with very little time to pull off a proposal. She never saw it coming. They went to dinner and then headed off to a party to watch fireworks. Once they started, Kyle suggested that they go outside for a better view. So they walked along the beach. Fireworks sparkling and waves lapping, hand in hand. This was the moment, Kyle decided. He asked Fiorella, “How do you say sand in Spanish?” Arena. “And how do you say fireworks?” Fuegos artificiales. “And how do you say Quieres casarte conmigo?” It was the line he had been practicing, but Fiorella couldn’t believe what she was hearing. After realizing that he was indeed serious and that she had a question to answer, she said yes. She’ll tell you it was the most beautiful night of her life. Thank you to Kelly Ewell Photography for sharing!
Susana & Matt live in New York City, but have family who lives close to Frederick, Maryland, so they decided to have their wedding here in Maryland at the Stone Manor Country Club. Matt’s family is Jewish, and Susana’s family is Chinese, so they combined the two traditions for a unique Chinese-Jewish wedding celebration, complete with Chinese wedding outfits (made in China on Beijing’s famous silk street) and Jewish traditions, such as the chuppa and the hora. Susana & Matt opted to do a first look in the Chinese wedding outfits, and then change and do another first look in the traditional American wedding outfits. Susana & Matt had a friend officiate the wedding and read personalized letters from each other as their wedding vows. They also came up with a clever, program filled with great humor detailing what the traditions were that they celebrated throughout the day. Thank you for sharing, Susie & Becky!

Jonathan and Julia met as young children while going to church together. At 10 years old they were teased by siblings that they liked each other. It was soon realized that they in fact did like each other. They spent a lot of time instant messaging and writing notes to each other. For Julia’s 13th birthday, Jonathan bought her a heart shaped locket with a picture of him in it. Parents got wind of this and things quickly changed. Fast forward 6 years later to Julia’s college graduation, when her brother invited Jonathan on the family’s celebratory trip. Jonathan stayed an extra day when Julia’s friends went home and they spent time talking and catching up. They were surprised by each other’s personalities and changes during those six years. About three weeks later the two went to a family wedding together and their families were so surprised and excited, as it had been predicted for years. After 17 months of dating, Jonathan proposed on Christmas Eve. He asked Julia to grab gifts out of the trunk, she opened the trunk only to find the open ring box. When she turned around, surprised and confused, she found Jonathan on one knee. The 6.5 month engagement will consist of planning a wedding and buying a house. The two are getting married July 13th, 2014 at The Links at Gettysburg and will be honeymooning in Punta Cana. Thank you to Mary Sarah Photography for sharing this day with us!
Rebecca and Kevin met in high school and after years of togetherness, were married on a slightly rainy day in May. Luckily, the rain stopped long enough to provide us with an amazing double rainbow and time to take plenty of outdoor portraits! Rebecca and her mother, Joyce, planned a classically elegant affair, complete with stunning gowns (thanks to her mother’s premiere gown shop, Potomac Bridals), real bow ties for the guys, amazing place settings featuring Rebecca’s grandmother’s plate collection, and so many more lush details! Thank you to Spence Photographics for sharing this beautiful day!

To hashtag or not to hashtag? Two area experts share their opinions (and tips) on hashtagging your wedding.
JANICE CARNEVALE, owner of DC-based Bellwether Events:
If you and your friends and family are very active on social media, you might want to hashtag your wedding. This will allow your friends and family from all aspects of your lives to connect via these social media outlets and share images and thoughts before, during and after your wedding weekend.
You will want to think about it early on and make a plan so that it is a successful hashtag. First, decide on a hashtag, and make sure no one else has used it already. My friends and clients have used #meetthemindells, #lindseywedsbryan and #notthefootballmannings. You don’t want to pick something so common and easy (#emmaandchris) that some other couple might use it too. If you and your friends primarily use Instagram, don’t worry about picking one that is a little longer, as you have unlimited characters on Instagram. If you and your friends use Twitter more often, then a shorter hashtag is better.
LISA ROWAN, DC-based writer/editor and owner of Beltway Vintage:
First, a word of caution: using a hashtag may make your wedding public, regardless of whether you want it to be. It’s worth taking time to consider how—if at all—you’d like guests to use their mobile devices at your wedding.
Warning aside, hashtags can be a lot of fun. A hashtag can allow more people to participate in your big day. We’re not just talking about far-away folks who can’t make the trip, but also about friends and family who may not care for dancing, but love to catch others in celebration. And in the first few days following your wedding, hashtagged pictures can fill the gap between your memories and your in-the-works professional photos.
JANICE:
Once you have the hashtag picked out, you need to inform your guests about it. The best way to do this is to include it in everything your guests will see: the save-the-date, wedding website, on an enclosure card in your invitation, in the welcome bag welcome note, and on the paper goods and signage around actual the wedding. You should also use the hashtag throughout the engagement whenever you are doing something wedding related – interviewing photographers, at a catering tasting, during a tux fitting etc. Remind your Wedding Party early and often to use the hashtag as well. Make sure all your wedding professionals know about it too – your planner should include it on the wedding day timeline.
LISA:
Make it easy for guests to participate. Beyond word-of-mouth, consider including your hashtag on programs or table numbers—or even on the invitations themselves. A screen to stream tweets and pictures is the hippest new addition to modern wedding festivities, but not required. Guests will be able to keep up, as long as they’ve charged their phone batteries!
JANICE:
You must be prepared to explain what a hashtag is and how to use it those wedding guests who are not as social-media savvy. I explain hashtags as a way to attach your image or tweet to a unique search engine within that social media outlet. If you have a better way to explain hashtags, please share in the comments! And please share your wedding hashtags too so we can all check them out!

What a fun place to have your engagement session — The Great Frederick Fair — an annual Frederick tradition since 1862! Photos by Brad Barnwell.
From the bride:
Colin and I had our first date at the Great Frederick Fair in 2000 and were both in high school at the time. We’ve grown up going to the Great Frederick Fair with family and friends and love taking in the sights, sounds, and especially the food. We try to go each year to the fair and decided this year we’d shoot our engagement photos since we were getting married in May. In fact, we held out on getting them taken just to have them taken at the fair — something different, and a place with significance to both of us.
This sunny spring-time engagement session, in a quintessential Frederick country setting, is just simply gorgeous!
From the photographer, Jenna Shriver:
This engagement session means a lot to me personally because I have been friends with both Tim and Brittney for years. I played softball with Brittney in high school and Tim and I were friends after high school. Since then, he has become best friends with my husband. When Tim told my husband and I that he started dating Brittney I literally jumped for joy! I just knew she was THE ONE for him. Brittney was living and working in Alabama at the time, but they connected when she was home visiting her family in Maryland for Christmas. They continued a long distance relationship for a few months then she made plans to move back home to Maryland. They were engaged the following Christmas and married the next Spring. Tim and I conspired on planning the photo session as a distraction for Brittney that day because we had planned her surprise shower to take place that afternoon! We were pretty sly though because she thought she planned the whole day herself. It was a typical chilly and windy early spring day, but the lighting and grounds at this estate were beautiful! We walked around the grounds and she told me all about their wedding day plans. We successfully surprised her a few hours later with her bridal shower.
Katie and Garrett were married on the green at Musket Ridge Golf Course, one of our favorite venues! Check out those beautiful views, and the gorgeous couple!

We are digging this sweet, simple engagement session! No props, no setups- just two people crazy in love in a place they enjoy!
From the photographer, Mary Brunst:
They are a couple so obviously in love, and so obviously each others best friend. I had an absolute blast hanging out with them and photographing them in downtown Frederick, MD along the Carroll Creek Promenade… where Bryce had proposed to Megan a few months earlier.
With “#punkasswedding” as their official wedding hashtag, Kayleigh and Nick’s wedding at Shade Trees & Evergreens in Frederick, MD was full of spunk! There are tons (we mean TONS) of colorful details and DIY touches throughout the day – feast your eyes below! Thank you to Jenna Ebert Photography for sharing this day with us!

From the photographer, Addie Eshelman: “I loved photographing Sara and Nate at King’s Gap State Park in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Their sweet spirits were evident throughout our time together. When Nate looks at Sara, there is special sparkle in his eye that you just cannot miss. They see the ultimate best in one another and it was simply adorable to be around!”
