“We knew it was going to be a great day when the Bridesmaids broke into the Groomsmen’s suite and stole all of their liquor.”
Katie and Mike met in February 2012 at a Team River Runner kayak session at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Mike, a wounded Army Combat Medic, was attending the session as a participant while Katie was there as a volunteer, helping to teach wounded service members the sport of kayaking.
“Over the next year, we built the foundation of our relationship traveling around whitewater kayaking together. I wasn’t interested in a relationship, Mike was persistent and after spending all of our free-time together I finally caved, and ended up asking Mike out.”
155 guests were in attendance for their outdoor ceremony at Dulaney’s Overlook, including six bridesmaids and five groomsmen. “We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect celebration of us and our love,” shared Katie.
The couple chose a “rustic fall theme” for their decor. They incorporated dark purple and burnt orange around their reception. When asked why they chose Frederick for their wedding, Katie shared that, “We started our lives together in Maryland, and knew that we wanted to have the wedding here rather than in New York or Utah, where we each grew up. Additionally, we knew that we wanted to have an outdoor wedding in the country. We both had a farm wedding pictured in our minds, and after looking at a few venues we went to see Dulany’s Overlook and as we pulled onto the property and up the hill we both looked at each other and said, ‘this is the place!’”
Katie is a Biomedical Engineer at C-Motion and Mike is a Senior Research Assistant at Child Trends. They currently reside in Rockville.
